Die Insel ist von Felsen umgeben, vor denen hunderte von Schiffswracks liegen. Auf beiden Seiten der Insel herrschen tückische Gezeitenströme; der Swinge zwischen Alderney und Burhou (einer Felseninsel vor dem Hafen) sowie La Raz in der Longis Bay. Zwischen Alderney und Frankreich liegt die Straße von Alderney.

The island has a small, well managed airport with three operational runways and handles over 70,000 passengers a year arriving by scheduled or charter flights from Southampton, Guernsey, Jersey (via Guernsey), or by private aircraft from the UK and the Continent.
Low landing fees, VAT-free avgas and duty-free services make Alderney's airport - which has been operating since 1936 - a particularly attractive landing spot for private aviators.
Braye Harbour, the gateway to the Channel Islands and France, accommodates a passenger ferry from France and Guernsey and cargo vessels. The island is a popular first port of call which welcomes thousands of yachtsmen from all over Europe every year.
